What does ‘wellness’ mean in therapy?
When people talk about wellness, it often conjures up images of yoga mats, green juices, or meditation apps; all great things, but when it comes to therapy, wellness is about something deeper. It’s about feeling more like yourself, understanding your emotions, and finding a way through whatever you’re facing.
At Routes to Wellness, I offer counselling in Exeter, Fleet, and Bournemouth, and also online therapy for people across the UK. Many of the people I work with describe a feeling of living behind a mask, smiling, coping, keeping up appearances, while privately battling anxiety, low mood, grief, or a sense of disconnection. Therapy can help you feel more in control and less alone.
It’s About Your Whole Self
Therapy supports wellness by helping you:
Make sense of your emotions
Break out of negative thought cycles
Set better boundaries
Heal from past pain
Find tools that actually work for you
Basically, therapy helps you get back in touch with who you are and who you want to be.
Wellness Looks Different for Everyone
For some people, wellness might mean learning how to slow down and relax. For others, it’s about speaking up more, building confidence, getting through tough times without falling apart, or managing ADHD or autism.
In therapy, you get to figure out what wellness looks like for you. No pressure, no judgment; just a space to explore what you need to feel balanced and okay.
A Down-to-Earth Space to Talk
Therapy with me isn’t stiff or overly clinical. I aim to create a space that feels safe, relaxed, and real, so you can talk openly and be yourself.
Here’s what I offer:
In-person therapy in Exeter (Devon), Fleet (Hampshire), and Bournemouth (Dorset)
Online counselling across the UK, using Teams, Zoom or Google Meet
Phone sessions, if that suits you more
Single-session therapy for one-off support
Home visits, if needed
I’m a BACP-registered therapist, which means my work is underpinned by an ethical framework, to keep you safe.
It’s Not About Being Perfect
Wellness doesn’t mean you’ll never feel stressed or sad again. Life still happens. But therapy gives you the tools to handle those moments in a way that’s healthier and less overwhelming. It’s more about progress than perfection.
The Bottom Line
In therapy, wellness is about learning how to take care of yourself, not just in the hard moments, but all the time. It’s about growing, healing, and creating a life that feels real and meaningful. And you don’t have to do it alone.
